Roofing Calculator

Calculate roof area in square feet, square meters, and roofing squares, adjusted for pitch and a waste allowance.

Quick answer

33 bundles (11 squares). Steeper pitches multiply the footprint first — see the table.

How it works

Roof length × Roof width = Base area

The calculator multiplies the roof's length by its width to get the base footprint area — the area as if the roof were perfectly flat.

Base area × Pitch multiplier = Roof surface area

Each pitch has a multiplier that accounts for the slope. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one with the same footprint. For example, a 6:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118.

Roof surface area × (1 + Waste) = Recommended area

The waste factor is applied to the pitch-adjusted area. The result is divided by 100 to convert to roofing squares — the standard ordering unit for shingles and underlayment.

Worked example

A 40 ft × 30 ft roof with 6:12 pitch:

40 × 30 = 1,200 sq ft

1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 sq ft

1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.8 sq ft

1,475.8 ÷ 100 = 14.76 squares → 15 squares

Roofing is estimated in squares — 100 square feet each — and the number everyone forgets is the pitch multiplier. A 1,000 sq ft footprint at a 12/12 pitch is 1,414 sq ft of roof; estimating it flat leaves you four squares short on delivery day.

This calculator takes your roof's footprint, applies the pitch multiplier for the slope you select, adds waste for cuts and valleys, and converts to roofing squares. Shingles are sold by the bundle at 3 bundles per square — the table below bridges the two.

How to measure for roofing

  1. Measure the building's footprint — length × width in feet — not the sloped roof surface. The pitch setting does that conversion.
  2. Select the pitch: rise over a 12-inch run. A 6/12 is a common suburban pitch; measure with a level and tape if unsure.
  3. Keep waste at 10% for a simple gable roof; use 15% with hips, valleys, or dormers — every valley eats shingles.
  4. Convert squares to bundles at 3 per square, and remember ridge caps and starter strips are separate line items.

Pitch multipliers (per 1,000 sq ft of footprint)

Multiplier = √(1 + (rise/12)²). Measure pitch with a 12-inch level.

Worked example: shingles for a 1,000 sq ft roof

A 1,000 sq ft roof footprint (pitch handled separately), 10% waste:

  1. Base: 1,000 ÷ 100 = 10 squares.
  2. With 10% waste: 10 × 1.10 = 11 squares.
  3. Bundles: 11 × 3 = 33 bundles.

Pro tips for roofing estimates

  • Measure hips and valleys with extra respect: they generate the most waste on the roof, which is why complex roofs get 15%.
  • Ridge caps cover roughly 30 linear feet per bundle — count your ridge length separately; it's not in the square count.
  • In cold climates, ice-and-water shield along the eaves (2 ft past the warm wall) is code in many places and cheap insurance everywhere.
  • Never stack a third layer. Two layers is the max most codes allow, and tear-off lets you inspect the deck you're trusting.

How to use the roofing calculator

1. Choose your unit system — Imperial (feet) or Metric (meters).

2. Enter the length and width of your roof at the base — the footprint as seen from above.

3. Select your roof pitch from the dropdown — from flat (0:12) up to a steep 12:12.

4. Select a waste factor — 10% is standard for simple roofs, 15% for complex ones.

5. Click Calculate to see your roof area in square feet, square meters, and roofing squares.

How roof area is calculated

The calculator first determines the base area by multiplying the roof length by the roof width. This gives the footprint area as if the roof were flat.

The base area is then multiplied by the pitch multiplier for your selected slope. A steeper pitch means more surface area — a 12:12 roof has about 41% more surface than a flat roof with the same footprint.

Finally, the waste factor is applied to the pitch-adjusted area to give you the recommended amount of material to order. The result is converted to roofing squares by dividing by 100.

Understanding roof pitch

Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run over 12 inches. For example, a 6:12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.

Common residential pitches range from 4:12 to 9:12. Low-slope roofs (2:12 to 4:12) are easier to walk on but may require special underlayment. Steep roofs (9:12 and above) shed water and snow quickly but are more difficult and expensive to work on.

Roofing calculator example

Suppose your roof is 40 feet long and 30 feet wide, with a 6:12 pitch.

Base area: 40 × 30 = 1,200 square feet.

Pitch multiplier for 6:12 = 1.118.

Pitch-adjusted area: 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341.6 square feet.

With 10% waste: 1,341.6 × 1.10 = 1,475.8 square feet.

Roofing squares: 1,475.8 ÷ 100 = 14.76 — round up to 15 squares.

You should order approximately 15 roofing squares for this project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much roofing material I need?+
Multiply the roof length by the roof width to get the base area, then multiply by the pitch multiplier for your roof slope. Divide the result by 100 to get roofing squares — the standard unit for ordering shingles. Add a waste factor of 10% to 15% for cuts, valleys, and overlaps.
What is a roofing square?+
A roofing square is equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofing materials like shingles and underlayment are sold by the square. To convert your roof area to squares, divide the total square footage by 100.
What is a roof pitch multiplier?+
A roof pitch multiplier accounts for the extra surface area created by the slope of the roof. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one with the same footprint. The multiplier is based on the ratio of rise to run — for example, a 6:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.118, meaning the roof surface is about 11.8% larger than the footprint.
How much waste should I add for roofing?+
A 10% waste factor is standard for simple gable roofs. For roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, hips, or complex shapes, use 15%. Waste accounts for cuts at edges and valleys, overlapping courses, damaged shingles, and starter and cap courses that use extra material.
How do I measure my roof for the calculator?+
Measure the length and width of the roof at the base — the footprint as seen from above. Then determine your roof pitch, which is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run over 12 inches. If you are unsure, a 6:12 pitch is common for many residential roofs. The calculator applies the pitch multiplier to get the actual surface area.
